Charly Suarez- next win is a ticket to 2012 London Olympics

Filipino boxer Charly Suarez is now one win away from qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics after defeating Daisuke Narimatsu at the AIBA Asian Olympic Qualifying Event.

Only the winner of the lightweight division will qualify for the Olympics while one more boxer wil be chosen by the AIBA Tripartite Selection Committee.

Charly Suarez is the last boxer standing in the Philippines quest for a berth in the London Olympic Games later this year after four other hopefuls including Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar were badly beaten in the Asian qualifying tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan.

According to the report  from GMA News, Suarez outscored Narimatsu in all three rounds. The Filipino ended the first round with a slim 4-3 lead before establishing a better cushion in the second, 9-5. He was relentless in round three, putting on an offensive show to outscore his opponent 11-3 for a 24-11 final score.

After fierce competition in Astana, Kazakhstan, 12 of the 25 slots available in the quota for the 2012 AIBA Asian qualifying event have already been decided, while the other 13, including that of Suarez’s division, will be decided during two intriguing days of semifinal and final battles.

Suarez needs to win a gold medal to be able to qualify for the London Olympics later this year.

Filipino boxer Charly Suarez failed to earn an Olympic slot after losing to Chinese boxer Liu Qiang in the lightweight division finals of the AIBA Asian Olympic qualifying event in Kazakhstan on Thursday afternoon-April 12, 2012.
