Philippines Team- 2012 London Olympics 5 Team members only

London Olympics 2012: Philippines is set for one of tiniest teams.

The Philippines would field one of their smallest Olympic delegations ever at the London Games with just five athletes set to represent the world’s 12th most populous nation. Boxer Mark Anthony Barriga has qualified on merit, while each country must field a male and female competitor each to athletics and swimming regardless of performances, Philippine Olympic Committee spokesman Joey Romasanta told AFP. The Philippines have failed to qualify athletes in other Olympic sports they have previously had representation in, notably taekwondo, Romasanta said. The Philippines will attempt to get more boxers in at the last Asian qualifying tournament in Kazakhstan in April, but Romasanta was not optimistic.

“It’s going to be very slim,” he said, assessing the Filipino boxers’ chances there. The country of 94 million people fielded 15 athletes in Beijing in 2008 and 14 in Athens four years earlier to try to break their Olympic gold medal duck. However none of them made an impression. After making their Olympic debut in Paris in 1924, the Philippines have won just two silver medals, both in boxing, and seven bronze. The last Filipino Olympic medallist was Mansueto Velasco, the losing finalist in men’s light-flyweight boxing at the Atlanta Games in 1996. Romasanta said he did not have the figures for the sizes of Filipino delegations to earlier Games. But press reports said the smallest Philippine Olympic team ever comprised four athletes who went to the 1928 Amsterdam Games.

The 29-year-old won his heat but posted 50.35 seconds which was the 21st fastest time behind world champion James Magnussen (48.26) and his Olympic odyssey was over.

As the 2012 London Olympics is fast approaching, this is also the best time for us to give honor to our past Olympians and hopefully their hardwork and perseverance would served as an inspiration to our future Olumpians. This time we would like to recognized the honor and glory that Tshomlee Go gave to our country.

Tshomlee Cabanos Go born January 13, 1981 in Iriga City, Camarines Sur is a taekwondo practitioner from the Philippines. He represented the country in the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics.

In January 2011, two-time Olympian and three-time Southeast Asian Games taekwondo champion Tshomlee Go has decided to call it quits and open a new chapter in his life by marrying his longtime girlfriend in the United States.

It's a hard decision to make, especially when you love the sport very much said Go in a Facebook message. But maybe, that was it for me [so I can] open a new chapter in my life.

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) has announced details of the lighting of the Olympic Flame and its arrival into the UK on the 18 May.

The Flame will be lit in Greece on 10 May and travel on board a special gold-liveried aircraft to Cornwall ahead of the Torch Relay, which starts on the 19 May.

Ancient Games

Organised by the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), the Olympic Flame will be lit using the sun's rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional hour-long ceremony among the historic ruins of the home of the ancient Games.

The Flame will then be taken on an eight-day relay around Greece before arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens on 17 May for the official Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony.

Flight 'BA2012'

British Airways, the official airline partner of the London 2012 Games, will carry the Olympic Flame on board flight ‘BA2012’, a gold-liveried aircraft, from Athens into the UK on 18 May.

As the Olympic Flame is classified as a symbolic flame it is permitted to be carried on board an aircraft subject to special authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority. It will travel in a ceremonial lantern that is secured in a specially designed cradle which is, in turn, firmly fixed to its seat on the plane using a secure holding device.

Arrival in the UK

It will arrive into the UK at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose, near Helston in Cornwall, in the early evening of 18 May. The arrival at this venue acknowledges the vital contribution that maritime and coastal search and rescue services undertake for our island nation.

On the morning of 19 May, the Olympic Flame will travel from RNAS Culdrose to Land’s End ready for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. It will then be carried on a 70-day journey across the UK, arriving at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said: ‘It gives me great pleasure to confirm 10 May as the Flame lighting date and RNAS Culdrose as the Olympic Flame’s arrival point into the UK. My team is looking forward to working with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the Ministry of Defence and our commercial partners to create exciting events to mark the Flame’s Greek provenance and its arrival to our shores.’

'Honoured'

Captain Willie Entwisle, Commanding Officer of Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, said: ‘We are honoured that the Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK by landing at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose.

'Our personnel, many of whom are currently supporting the Royal Navy on operations across the globe, are very excited that the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games will start here.’

Philippine Olympic Committee targets 6 Olympic slots

The Philippines is hoping to send six athletes in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London in July, according to chief of mission Manny Lopez.

“The way it looks, our assessment is that five to six athletes will go to London,” said Lopez, also the vice-president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

So far, only boxer Mark Anthony Barriga and long jumper Marestella Torres have secured slots to the quadrennial event.

Lopez said they are still hopeful that the number would increase, although conceding that the delegation would be the smallest since the country sent 12 athletes in Atlanta in 1996.

In addition to Barriga and Torres, the Philippines is allowed to send three more athletes because it has two slots each in athletics and swimming.

The country sent 15 athletes to Beijing in 2008 and 16 in Athens four years earlier.
